Every rider dreams of that perfect destination—where the roads, the scenery, and the sheer joy of riding come together. For me, the French Alps are that place. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to ride some of the most breathtaking roads in Europe, you’re in for a treat. Here are my top seven favorite mountain passes in the French Alps that keep drawing me back, time and time again.

Highest pass in the Alps - Col de l'Iseran

Why the French Alps?

What makes the French Alps so special? These roads wind through towering peaks, ancient villages, and untouched landscapes, offering a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility. The region’s variety is unmatched, from high alpine passes to stunning canyons like Daluis and Verdon. There are also the iconic balcony roads, carved straight into the rock face, providing exhilarating rides with steep drops and unmatched views.

The French Alps are home to the highest paved mountain passes in Europe, many rising well above the tree line to reveal stark and captivating landscapes. What I love most is the feeling of solitude and freedom—roads that feel like they were made just for you. Riding here is not just about the destination; it’s about experiencing the journey through history and nature.

Let’s dive into the top seven passes that make the French Alps a motorcycling paradise.

Col de l'Iseran in early October

1. Col de l'Iseran

At 2,764 meters, the Col de l'Iseran is the highest paved pass in the Alps and earns its nickname ‘King of the Alps.’ The long, winding roads cut through dramatic and rugged landscapes, offering breathtaking views at every turn. It’s also a legendary feature of the Tour de France, and the changing landscapes throughout the seasons make every ride unique. Be aware, though, that it’s one of the last passes to open in summer and among the first to close in winter.

2. Col du Grand Saint-Bernard

One of the most ancient passes in the Western Alps, the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard has been connecting Italy and Switzerland for centuries, with origins tracing back to the Bronze Age. Its rich history and stunning scenery make it a joy to ride. The summit features a picturesque lake and a café, perfect for a mid-ride stop. With most modern traffic diverted to a tunnel, the old road remains a peaceful, scenic route for riders.

3. Col du Galibier

The Col du Galibier is legendary for its tight switchbacks and steep climbs. It’s a challenging ride that rewards you with stunning summit views, including Mont Blanc on clear days. While the summit crossing is unforgettable, a tunnel built in 1890 offers an alternative in poor weather conditions. Riding here is an adrenaline rush and a must for any alpine adventurer.

Col d’Izoard

4. Col d’Izoard

The Col d’Izoard feels otherworldly, especially in the ‘Casse Déserte’ section, where the barren, rocky landscapes create an almost lunar vibe. Famous for its role in the Tour de France, it’s a favorite for its smooth road surfaces and excellent flow of curves. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, this pass offers a fantastic mix of challenge and enjoyment.

5. Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard

The Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard may not reach the towering heights of other passes, but it’s packed with charm. With 52 thrilling hairpin turns, the ride is equally exciting from either approach. The town of La Rosière on the southern side is an excellent stopover, offering stunning sunset views over the mountains.

6. Col de la Cayolle

For a quieter and more serene ride, the Col de la Cayolle is a hidden gem. Part of the famous Route des Grandes Alpes, this pass sees less traffic, allowing you to fully enjoy its beauty. The summit lacks infrastructure, but the ride itself is a perfect blend of excitement and tranquility.

7. Col de la Bonette

Often mistaken as the highest pass in the Alps, the Col de la Bonette features a loop called the ‘Cime de la Bonette’ that takes you to one of the highest paved elevations in Europe. The mix of tight hairpins and long straights creates the perfect balance of challenge and fun. This iconic pass is a must-ride for anyone exploring the French Alps.
